Freshwater River / Mason Bay
Our water taxi service to Freshwater River (the “Gateway to Mason Bay”), provides access to the Southern and North-West Circuits. Mason Bay is a popular multi-day tramp with a stay at either the Mason Bay or Freshwater DOC huts, and a high chance of seeing the Rakiura Tokoeka (Stewart Island Kiwi) in the wild.
If you are tramping the full Southern or North-West Circuits (generally up to 5 and 11 days respectively), these are regarded as remote, challenging tramps, needing good fitness and route-finding skills.
The Freshwater River is a tidal destination, with departure and return times varying from day to day, so please enquire with us directly for service times and availability. This trip is also available as a scenic, round trip service.
