Ulva Island Freedom Walk
We offer convenient, on demand water taxi trips to Ulva Island/ Te Wharawhara, the world’s southern-most open bird sanctuary, with no strict schedules. Go your way…
- The island combines native bush, picturesque sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and around 4.5 kilometres of easy walking track.
- Declared pest-free in 1997, Ulva is a habitat where rare plants and endangered birds thrive. It’s a unique opportunity to spot Stewart Island robin, kakariki, saddleback, and mohua (yellowhead) among others. If you’re lucky, you might spot a Stewart Island Brown Kiwi (Tokoeka).
- Enjoy full commentary on the short, scenic trip from Golden Bay, across Paterson Inlet and the Ulva Island Marine Reserve.
- Typically, a 2 to 4 hour visit with a flexible pick-up time can be arranged to suit.
- A self-guide booklet “Explore an Island Paradise” is available from our Booking Office (Main Rd) for a $2 donation to the Ulva Island Charitable Trust.
- Enjoy this service as a freedom walker, or check out our Guided Walk options.
- Departures from Halfmoon Bay are possible for larger groups, bookings essential. Contact us to make a booking.
