Activities
Between 1923 and 1933 the Ross Sea Whaling Company of Sandefjord, Norway made nine expeditions to the Ross Sea in Antarctica while using a base in Paterson Inlet. Today it is called ‘The Whaler’s Base’. The purpose of the facility was to repair the whale chasers through ‘the whaling season’ (November to February). Explore the relics still to be seen at the base including the old rusty workshop boiler on the beach and the foundations of the slipway. |

The Ulva Island open sanctuary is one of only a few predator-free sanctuaries for native plants and rare and endangered birds in New Zealand. Since the eradication of rats, the Island’s birdlife has flourished and several bird species have been released including the rare South
Island Saddleback (Tieke) (pictured), Rifleman (Titipounamu), South Island Robin (Toutouwai), Yellowhead (Mohua) and the Southern Island Brown Kiwi or Tokoeka. An absolute must for bird lovers, we provide an Ulva Island bird booklet including full colour photographs and bird call descriptions, Ulva Island history and a walking track map to ensure a great self-guided experience! With its well-maintained tracks the Island offers many easy walking options ranging from 20 minutes to 2 hours, and a chance to enjoy the stunning beaches and sprawling views of Paterson Inlet from the lookout. |

Take the opportunity to see the endemic New Zealand sea lion, fur seals and the rare and endangered Hector's and Maui's dolphins. Cruise along the spectacular coast of Paterson Inlet. Seabirds abound in our coastal waters due to the rich supply of food. Albatross, mollymawk, petrel, cormorants and blue penguin are regularly seen. Sooty shearwaters (Titi) are seen in large numbers during their breeding season. If time permits, explore Paterson Inlet’s Salmon and Mussel farms. |
